Food Quality and Taste: 10 (Allie) + 9.5 (Dustin)
A: This was the best meal I've eaten in a while! My favorite was the Cajun cheese curds with the blackberry jalapeno ketchup- I was a big fan of the smokiness of the Cajun seasoning paired with the sweet dip. The flavor of jalapeno can be a hit or miss for me, but it can be extraordinary if paired right, as it was for the ketchup! The fried chicken was perfectly crispy, covered in flavorful Nashville spices and remoulade sauce to bring it to the next level.
D: This food was exceptional quality and tasted really good. The flavors melted in my mouth and the cheese curds tasted amazing. My favorite were the cheese curds. Don't get me wrong, the catfish was really good, but the cheese curds were the best I've had in a while.
Presentation: 8 (Allie) + 9 (Dustin)
A: Our dishes were presented to us on nice(r) plates and each had it's own garnish. It is clear that the staff goes out of their way to make their food look nice.
D: I don't know- it was presented nicely?
Service: 10 (Allie) + 10 (Dustin)
A: Our waiter, Justin, was extremely personable and made a few recommendations before taking our order. He seemed to be knowledgeable of the menu and was very helpful. Our food came pretty quickly (about 15 minutes) and Justin checked in on us every once in a while to make sure we were doing alright while we waited.
D: Our waiter stopped by fairly often to check on us and we got our food quickly. Our waiter was a talkative gentleman and seemed like a people person.
Atmosphere: 8 (Allie) + 8 (Dustin)
A: The atmosphere was bustling with eager patrons ready to enjoy the food. It seemed that we came at just the right time because the line was wrapping around the reception area shortly after we were seated. There was plenty of room for everyone, comfortable seating, and many different TVs playing different sports games for us to watch. It was very loud, however, which is expected then the seating area is pretty open and plenty of hard surfaces for sound waves to bounce off of.
D: It was kind of loud in the restaurant but it was a really nice place to be.
Value for Money: 9 (Allie) + 7.5 (Dustin)
A: I feel that the prices were on the higher side, however, I felt that the prices reflected the flavor that each dish had. I made the comment while eating that the price was definitely worth it for how it tasted!
D: Prices were on the higher side, but for what you get, I feel it's worth it.
Menu Variety: 7 (Allie) + 8.5 (Dustin)
A: The menu had many different options to choose from. I can't complain with what was offered, but do wish that there was maybe a little bit more options to reflect how diverse and extensive southern culture really it.
D: I think the menu variety was a little overwhelming, but they had a lot of great choices.
Specialty and Uniqueness: 10 (Allie) + 6 (Dustin)
A: I love being able to be transported to southern hospitality here in the Midwest! There are many restaurants that offer merely a taste of southern tradition, but we were really able to be immersed here.
D: I don't think that there was much unique about it other than not being able to get southern food around here.
Overall Rating: 8.6/10 Bites
Southern Social delivers bold Southern flavors in Minnesota. The food was the clear highlight, with both of us raving about the Cajun cheese curds and praising the fried chicken, catfish, and other Southern-inspired flavors. Presentation was thoughtful, service was excellent and personable, and the atmosphere was lively—though a bit loud. Prices were slightly high, but the flavors justified the cost. The menu offered plenty of choices, though we wish for more variety reflecting the full depth of Southern cuisine. In terms of uniqueness, one of us felt truly transported to the South, while the other thought the main distinction was simply having Southern food available locally.
